Precision Peel: A New Approach to Fractional CO₂ Resurfacing

For practitioners, fractional CO₂ has long offered powerful resurfacing capabilities for concerns including photoageing, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, pigmentation and the appearance of scars. The challenge is balancing meaningful treatment outcomes with the downtime many patients are prepared to accept.

Precision Peel, delivered with eCO2 3D, offers practitioners a lower-downtime approach to fractional CO₂ resurfacing, creating an accessible entry point for patients who may not be ready for more intensive CO₂ treatments.

The Technology Behind It

Cynosure Lutronic is an established name in medical aesthetics, with a portfolio that includes PicoSure Pro, DermaV, XERF and a broad range of laser and energy-based technologies.

The eCO2 3D represents the latest generation of its fractional ablative CO₂ technology, combining an updated platform and interface with increased treatment versatility.

For practitioners, this creates greater flexibility to tailor resurfacing treatments according to indication, patient goals and acceptable downtime.

Understanding Fractional CO₂ Resurfacing

Ablative CO₂ laser resurfacing creates controlled thermal injury within the skin, initiating a wound-healing response that supports tissue renewal and collagen remodeling.

Traditional higher-intensity CO₂ resurfacing can deliver significant rejuvenation but may also involve a substantial recovery period. This can make treatment less appealing to patients who are unable or unwilling to accommodate extended downtime.

Fractional delivery provides another approach. By treating microscopic columns of tissue while leaving surrounding tissue intact, practitioners can harness CO₂ ablation while supporting a more rapid recovery.

Introducing Precision Peel

Precision Peel is the eCO2 3D’s signature low-downtime resurfacing protocol.

It uses fractional CO₂ technology to create controlled micro-ablative treatment zones while preserving surrounding tissue. This allows practitioners to offer CO₂ resurfacing to a broader patient cohort, particularly those who want to address visible skin ageing and textural concerns without committing to the recovery associated with more intensive resurfacing protocols.

It can also provide practitioners with a useful introduction to CO₂ treatments, with the ability to progress treatment parameters over time according to patient response, goals and tolerance.

What Practitioners and Patients Can Expect

During treatment
Precision Peel can typically be performed in approximately 10–15 minutes. Depending on the treatment parameters and individual patient, anaesthesia may not be required. Treatment creates microscopic ablation at the skin surface, with small white treatment points potentially visible immediately afterwards.

Immediately post-treatment
Mild erythema or flushing may be present following treatment. Patients should be provided with appropriate post-procedure skincare and sun-protection advice.

Over the following days
Patients may experience mild dryness or a textured sensation as the skin renews. Unlike more aggressive resurfacing protocols, significant visible peeling is generally not the objective of the Precision Peel approach.

Over the following week and beyond, patients may notice improvements in:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Skin texture

  • The appearance of scars

  • Pigmentation

  • Overall skin brightness and firmness

Where Precision Peel Fits in Practice

Precision Peel gives practitioners another option within their resurfacing toolkit.

It may be particularly suited to patients who:

  • Are interested in CO₂ resurfacing but concerned about downtime

  • Are not ready to progress directly to more intensive ablative treatments

  • Want to address early signs of photo-ageing and textural change

  • Are seeking an ongoing skin-maintenance treatment

  • Want a resurfacing treatment that can be incorporated into a staged treatment plan.

Importantly, the eCO2 3D platform allows treatment to be individualised. Practitioners can introduce suitable patients to fractional CO₂ through Precision Peel and, where clinically appropriate, progress to more intensive treatment parameters as their treatment goals evolve.

It’s a more adaptable way to bring the power of fractional CO₂ resurfacing into clinical practice, allowing practitioners to Peel with Precision.

RESULTS:

IMAGE A. Immediately after treatment fractional laser energy creates micro-ablated columns to stimulate cellular regrowth. The surrounding healthy tissue promotes rapid healing.

IMAGE B. Two days post treatment skin is healing on the surface and creating new dermal collagen. This will continue for up to six months. The improved skin quality will make for a more youthful appearance.
